When you open any child’s primary school textbook, you see ‘Family’ defined as mother, father, brother, and sister. However, a large portion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Queer (LGBTQ) people do not have the chance to experience family in the same way.
LGBTQ people in India and around the world have redefined their meaning of ‘Family’ by either refusing to stick to society’s norms of heterosexual marriage or by forming bonds within the LGBTQ community which substitute (and often surpass) ‘traditional’ families.
They have built ‘Families of Choice’. This Acceptance Meet, Yaariyan celebrates these bonds and brings out these stories of acceptance, brotherhood, and camaraderie.
It is a space for them to come and share their stories and journeys of acceptance. The aim is to pave the way for acceptance and rational attitudes toward Indian LGBTQ, particularly the youth.
